Being a mechanic by trade I have a lot of different kinds of tools. I work on a lot of different kinds of vehicles so I have to have the right tools to perform efficiently.
When I first started out nearly twenty years ago cordless tools were not very popular in the mechanical field. We were use to air impact wrenches and power drills. It never occurred to us that there would ever be such a thing as a cordless grinder or cordless impact for that matter.
1 2 Impact Wrench
In the last ten years cordless tools have definitely become more and more popular in the building construction field and the mechanical field.
I have owned cheap cordless drills in the past but they did not last very long, the motors would burn up. So for several years I did not bother purchasing any cordless tools. The other mechanics that worked in the same shop as I did all had a cordless impact wrench.
I thought it was kind of silly owning them; I was quite content with my air powered impact wrenches. I left that particular shop and found a job closer to home working on trucks.
Cordless impact wrenches had always been on my mind since I had left my previous job. About a year ago I finally cracked down and purchased a 1/2" drive cordless impact wrench. I figured I would only use it on service calls.
I didn't want to use it in the shop because I thought it would not have the torque that my air powered impact had. I kept telling myself that I'm old school; I don't want to be caught using a silly cordless impact by my boss. So for the first several months my cordless impact wrench spent most of its time in the carrying case.
As time went by I began pulling it out of the case and using it on small jobs. I like the feel of it and it was convenient to use. Eventually I started using it more and more.
One day my boss was mounting a set of duals on his John Deere 4620 tractor. He needed to tighten the bolts down on the rim. I was busy using my 1/2" drive air impact so I walked over to the shop bench, grabbed the 1/2" drive cordless and handed it to him.
He looked at me kind of funny and asked me if this would get the bolts tight enough. I said "sure, that impact has enough torque to keep your bolts tight on the rim." These were pretty good sized bolts (3/4" diameter) and I had no idea if the cordless impact was up for the task.
It was time to test it and see if it was a worthy purchase; the boss's tractor was going to be the first test. My boss farmed that whole week and I never heard anything about the duals coming loose on the tractor.
About two weeks went by and my boss and I had to make a road trip down to the farm to remove the duals from the tractor. By this time I was becoming more convinced that my 1/2" drive cordless impact wrench was a worthy purchase. Of course I took it along for the ride.
We got to the farm and got the duals up in the air so we could remove them. The impact hammered several times before it broke the bolts loose; we removed both duals with no trouble. After that experience I was sold on the fact that cordless impact wrenches are definitely worth the price.
I started using my cordless impact more and more; it got to the point where I would just grab the cordless impact anytime I needed an impact wrench for a job.
Times have changed for me and I feel I have caught up with the rest of the family of mechanics. Not only do I own my 1/2" drive cordless impact but I have added a cordless drill and about a month ago I purchased a 3/8" drive cordless impact wrench.
Today my air powered impact wrenches lie in my toolbox waiting to get used. My cordless impacts are the tool of choice for me; they get used every day.
Cordless impact wrenches are definitely worth the price of owning because they have come a long ways as far as having a lot of torque to get the job done. The battery life is about twice as long compared to the models built 15 to 20 years ago.
A couple of months ago I replaced a clutch in a 379 Peterbilt truck. I used my 1/2" drive cordless impact to do the entire job, including loosening the flywheel bolts on the crankshaft
Here are several reasons why I feel cordless impacts are definitely worth the price to own:
o Torque: Cordless impacts today have the torque to loosen or tighten the larger and tighter bolts or nuts.
o Efficiency: Battery life last at least twice as long as the older models and it takes 2/3 less time to fully charge a drained battery.
o Convenience: All I have to do is grab the cordless impact and go. I don't have to worry about dragging airlines across the shop to hook up my cordless impact. Also, I am not running over airlines with my creeper.
o Price: The price has not really come down all that much if any, but you are getting a better quality tool for your hard earned dollar; that there is worth the price.
If you are that automotive do-it-yourselfer you definitely want to consider adding cordless impacts to your tool collection. You don't have to worry about purchasing an air compressor just so you can operate air powered impacts.
Although I have to admit, an air compressor is nice to have in the garage but I will save that subject for a later date.
Just remember, quality is the key in any product. You may have to spend a little extra money for a name brand cordless impact, but I bet you will not be disappointed in its performance.
